“Brother should be fired ASAP”: LeSean McCoy calls out Kevin Stefanski for giving cold shoulder to Shedeur Sanders and mismanaging Browns QB room

Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy is not pleased with how Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has managed the quarterback room, particularly Shedeur Sanders.

The team started with Joe Flacco as its starter before shifting to Dillon Gabriel. The Browns turned to Sanders, their fifth-round pick, when that failed. McCoy urged the franchise to fire Stefanski.

"The brother should be fired as soon as possible," McCoy said on Tuesday, via "Speakeasy." "The way they managed the quarterback room was awful. They started a year out with a 40-year-old quarterback. Then they had Kenny Pickett. Then they get to camp and they find out that the fifth-rounder that I drafted is better than my third-rounder.

"The way he talks about Shedeur, I've never seen a coach talk about their quarterback in a certain way. He says the bare minimum about him. Everybody in the town loves him. The players love him. They're doing his dance, they're doing his celebration. Everybody loves him and they're excited to talk about it, but you don't. I'm so over the fence."

McCoy added that Cleveland has had only one good year with Stefanski at the helm. He also stressed that the Browns are picking in the top five every year.

Stefanski benched Sanders late in the best game of his rookie season. The quarterback could have pulled off a historic comeback with two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. However the coach decided to run a trick play featuring running back Quinshon Judkins in a potential game-tying 2-point attempt. The play failed and Cleveland lost 31-29 to Tennessee in Week 14.

Stefanski has compiled a 7-26 record over the past two seasons, including three wins in 2024.

Shedeur Sanders on his relationship with Kevin Stefanski

Shedeur Sanders dismissed the speculation suggesting tension between him and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski after the team's Week 16 game. The rookie quarterback talked about the importance of earning a coach’s trust. He said it comes through consistent execution, completing passes, moving the offense effectively and replicating strong performances from previous games.

Cleveland drafted Sanders at No. 144 in April. He was the second quarterback the franchise selected after Dillon Gabriel 50 picks earlier.
