Bronny James has spent much of his young NBA career navigating a spotlight unlike almost any player in league history. As the son of Lakers superstar LeBron James, every step of Bronny's basketball journey has been closely watched. From his selection in the 2024 NBA Draft to becoming part of the NBA's first father-son duo to play in a regular-season game together, the attention has rarely slowed.
This week, however, Bronny used that spotlight for something that had nothing to do with points, assists or highlights. The 21-year-old Lakers guard took to social media Wednesday to announce a partnership with the American Heart Association as part of CPR & AED Awareness Month. In an Instagram post, Bronny encouraged fans to learn CPR and understand how important quick action can be during a cardiac emergency.
“Knowing CPR isn’t just a skill … it’s a superpower!” Bronny wrote. “I’m teaming up with the American Heart Association to remind everyone how important it is to be ready in a cardiac emergency.”
A message with personal significance
For Bronny, the campaign has some added meaning. In July 2023, while preparing for his freshman season at USC, Bronny suffered cardiac arrest during a team workout. The frightening incident led to hospitalization and extensive medical evaluations before he was eventually cleared to return to basketball.
His successful comeback became one of the biggest sports stories of the year. Bronny returned to the court for USC later that season before eventually entering the NBA Draft and beginning his professional career with the Lakers. Because of that experience, his message about CPR awareness resonates on a different level than a typical public-service campaign.
The American Heart Association has long emphasized the importance of bystander CPR, noting that immediate action can significantly improve survival rates during cardiac emergencies.

Looking ahead to Year 3 with the Lakers
While Bronny's latest announcement focused on public health awareness, basketball remains the next chapter on the horizon. The guard recently completed his second season with Los Angeles and continues to develop his role within the organization. His career already includes a place in NBA history thanks to sharing the court with LeBron during the 2024-25 season.
As the NBA offseason unfolds, questions remain about the future of the Lakers roster and whether Bronny and LeBron will continue playing together in Los Angeles. For now, though, Bronny's attention is focused on something bigger than basketball.
His latest message serves as a reminder that athletes can use their platforms to create awareness about issues that affect people far beyond the arena, and in this case, potentially help save lives.
