The San Francisco 49ers accomplished their biggest goal this offseason when they managed to sign superstar quarterback Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension. While the deal appears to be a win for both sides, it turns out Purdy didn't actually get the sort of deal he was looking for.
Purdy's rise from being the "Mr. Irrelevant" of the 2022 NFL draft to a Pro Bowl caliber passer that nearly led the Niners to victory in Super Bowl LVIII has been nothing short of stunning. After two-and-a-half seasons as the team's starter under center, Purdy earned his new deal.
While Purdy is not the most gifted quarterback in any one area, he's very good at just about everything it takes to succeed at the most important position in the game. As a result, Purdy wanted to make $65 million per year in his new deal, but it was clear he was not going to get that from any team, whether it was San Francisco or one of the other 31 squads in the league.
"I remember talking to teams ... as they were trying to solve their quarterback needs, 'Any interest in Brock Purdy?' And they're like, 'Great player, but he's a great player for them. They didn't see him that way," Adam Schefter of ESPN said on "UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio" when asked about Purdy's alleged $65 million per year asking price.
— UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio (@UnSportsESPN) May 20, 2025The 49ers missed the playoffs last season, but it wasn't because of Purdy, who still managed to throw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns over 15 games despite the team's rash of injuries. Purdy himself would succumb to injuries, as he missed a pair of games due to shoulder and elbow ailments.
Regardless of what sort of deal Purdy was looking for, he eventually got what he was looking for, as he put pen to paper on his deal with San Francisco. Now, he will look to prove his worth, as he will continue to lead the 49ers offense from under center as they look to bounce back in 2025.
