Packers' $1 million linebacker, former first-round pick, fighting for roster spot, receives praise

The Green Bay Packers are working to get their defense heading in the right direction as the new season approaches. There are many holes to fill and plenty of room for improvement. Additionally, there is uncertainty surrounding their top cornerback, Jaire Alexander. While there have been discussions aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial contract, nothing has been finalized yet.

“On the contract front, the Packers could want a revised deal that allows Alexander—who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons—to earn his full salary if he’s healthy and available in 2025, but protects the team in case the injuries persist,” Zach Kruse wrote.

As for Alexander, he is still in regular communication with the Packers’ staff, but a deal is not close to being completed.

“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which could raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley took a different approach, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day, even while he’s skipping the offseason workouts,” Chris Schad wrote.

Meanwhile, there is growing buzz around Isaiah Simmons, who recently signed a one-year contract with the Packers. While Green Bay has not promised him a spot on the roster, Simmons is already beginning to impress.

“I see a really hungry player. He’s a very eager player right now, and he’s extremely athletic. I think his versatility is going to be something special," said linebackers coach Sean Duggan. "I don’t think you see a lot of 6-4 guys who weigh 240 pounds and can run a 4.3. But I see a guy who, just like everybody else, is putting his head down, working hard, and trying to learn the defense. He’s learning the way we do things here.”

Simmons was a highly touted prospect coming out of college but has struggled to find a stable home in the NFL. He’s certainly doing all the right things, and he could make a real impact on the Packers’ defense.
