San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan insisted Brock Purdy was his quarterback before anyone believed him. Purdy rewarded Shanahan's confidence by taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and the organization returned the favor earlier in 2025 by handing the former seventh-round pick a massive contract extension.
Now, it's up to Purdy to answer the call to be an elite quarterback.
Purdy has been beset by a toe injury to start the season, suffering a setback that knocked him off the field after initially missing Weeks 2 and 3. The 49ers have their sights set on getting Purdy fully healthy for the stretch run, but with Nick Bosa and Fred Warner out for the season, the pressure will be on Purdy and the offense to carry the load.
Here's a look back at the lucrative contract extension Purdy signed ahead of the 2025 season.

Brock Purdy contract details
Purdy agreed to a five-year, $265 million contract extension with $182.55 million guaranteed in May. The deal starts in 2026 and runs through 2030.
The 49ers have Purdy on a bargain of a contract in 2025, as he has a cap hit of only $9.1 million, but that figure is set to jump $24.8 million in 2026 and continue to rise.
Purdy's deal averages $53 million per year, so he isn't the NFL's highest-paid quarterback. In fact, Purdy is only tied for seventh with Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff.
Still, the 49ers paid Purdy to be an elite quarterback. One could argue he hasn't played like an elite quarterback since 2023, when he found himself in the MVP conversation deep into the season. Offensive injuries could be blamed for Purdy's step back in 2024, but his own injury questions are something he will have to overcome in 2025 and beyond to deliver on his hefty salary.

Once he's fully healthy, Purdy is hoping to finish out the 2025 season looking much more like the quarterback he was in 2023.

Purdy missed the final game of the 2024 season after suffering an elbow contusion in Week 17. The injury wasn't believed to be anything significant, but the 49ers were already out of playoff contention and didn't have any reason to risk their quarterback's health any further.
