While the Boston Red Sox were unable to make franchise history last night, they were able to learn two good things: they’re truly a playoff team when hot, and Brayan Bello is back.
Bello was great in his latest appearance, and has become a solid option for the Red Sox in his new role as a reliever.

Due to Ranger Suarez being under the weather, the Red Sox opted to throw a bullpen game in the final game to break their franchise record for longest winning streak. They started Eduardo Rivera, who normally is a solid opener; then, he gave up four runs before even making it out of the first inning.
Bello was then called in, and he was lights out. He went five and a third innings, and five Ks while giving up no runs. Since being called back up, he has only given up one run, gotten 10 Ks, and walked one batter in almost 10 innings.

Funnily enough, Bello has been a great “starting” pitcher for the Red Sox this season when he comes in for relief. Behind an opener, he’s averaging six innings per outing.
And, in those outings, he has the second-lowest ERA among qualified relievers with a 0.77, only behind Atlanta Braves set-up man Robert Suarez’s 0.56.
So, he eats innings like a starter would, isn’t giving up many runs, and all Boston needs to do is not have him throw the first pitch of the game.

Even with Bello’s great performances, his time on the big league roster may be limited. Boston’s roster has been heavily injured, and now players are starting to return. Suarez is up first,, and Connelly Early is on his way back as well.
At some point, the Red Sox will have to make a decision with Bello as their team continues to get healthier. Hopefully, Bello continues to produce, and can keep his spot in the bullpen.
