Braves viewed as an ideal landing spot for this veteran swingman pitcher

The Atlanta Braves have a solid rotation behind guys like Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Spencer Strider. However, you cannot overlook the injury history between the three.

Sale has been a pitcher who has made multiple trips to the IL over the years, and Strider had UCL surgery in 2024 and faced a hamstring strain last season. Schweellenbach missed time last season after fracturing his right elbow.

So, it could make sense for the Braves to come to terms on a few more arms. Luckily for them, there are still some intriguing options left.

Nick Martinez is a name that is getting more and more traction by the day. He is coming off a season with the Cincinnati Reds, where he made 40 appearances (26 starts), putting together an 11-14 record with a 4.45 EA on 165.2 innings of work.

What sets him apart from other pitchers is his ability to start games and come out of the bullpen. With this skillset, Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly believes he would be an excellent fit for the Braves.

"The Braves project to have a really strong starting rotation in 2026, though there are serious injury concerns with three-fifths of their Opening Day group. Would you bet on any of Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, or Reynaldo Lopez avoiding the injury list this upcoming season? Martinez could serve as insurance if any of them get hurt, or if Hurtson Waldrep doesn't take the step forward most anticipate he will."

Martinez could be used as a starter when seen fit, or if the starting pitchers avoid injury, he could be used in the bullpen.

There are not many teams that get this type of advantage, and Atlanta could be the team that needs a swingman the most.
