The Atlanta Braves are set to open up a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Truist Park on Tuesday. Atlanta is 40-20 this season and has the best record in MLB.
When the Braves announced their lineup for the upcoming first game in the Blue Jays series, it did not feature Ha-Seong Kim, which is becoming quite the commonality for manager Walt Weiss and his shortstop decision, which is once again the hot bat in Jorge Mateo.
Ha-Seong Kim's opportunities might be over with
The Braves signed Ha-Seong Kim to a one-year, $20 million contract this offseason, but how can you blame them for that decision in the moment? They needed a shortstop badly, and it was before Kim hurt his hand in the offseason.
He was back in the lineup in the Braves series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, but he went 0-for-3 in that contest, dropping his average to 0.89 this season with just four hits. Granite, Kim never got a formal spring training, but he did get some minor league options before being recalled.
Before Sunday's loss against the Reds, Kim had not played for the Braves in three games, so Walt Weiss is making his thoughts clear, which has been such a revelation for the Braves this season.
It's unclear how many opportunities Ha-Seong Kim will get before the Braves just bite the bullet on the $20 million deal.
The bottom line? Ha-Seong Kim's chances might be very limited until he can prove in some capacity that he is a better everyday option than Mauricio Dubon or Jorge Mateo, which looks unlikely on paper right now.
