The Atlanta Braves are coming off a disappointing 2025 season. A year marred by injuries and lackluster play, the Braves are looking to bounce back hugely in 2026.
To get back to playoff contention, the Braves need to have a strong offseason. While finding a shortstop is a priority with Ha-Seong Jim opting out of his deal, the Braves also need to make sure their rotation is strong.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Braves have already made one huge decision to ensure their rotation is at its best. Atlanta makes the expected $18 million move with Chris Sale, their All-Star left-handed ace.
Braves pick up Chris Sale's $18 million option
"Braves are picking up future Hall of Famer Chris Sale's $18M option," Heyman reports. "No surprise there."

— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) November 5, 2025The Braves holding onto their 36-year-old ace at $18 million for the 2026 season was a no-brainer. The 2024 Cy Young has been incredible for the Braves since joining the team after more than a decade in the American League.
From 2019 until 2023, across five years and four seasons, Sale wasn't named to an All-Star team as he dealt with injuries and regressed.

But, in 2024, the first year in Atlanta, Sale immediately got back to his ace-level form. He had a 2.38 ERA and an 18-3 record in 29 starts, earning his first career Cy Young Award.
In 2025, while he missed some time, Sale had a 2.58 ERA in 21 games with a 7-5 record, and another All-Star game nod. He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball since joining the Braves, making this contract decision an easy one to make.
Atlanta is bringing Sale back for one more year by picking up his $18 million contract option. As the Braves look to get back to the playoffs, Sale will look to have another strong year with the Braves.
