Typically, the starting quarterback of a 8-2 team isn’t booed after a win, but that’s what happened to Bo Nix after Denver’s 10-7 victory over Las Vegas on Thursday night. He wasn’t fazed, though.
“I’ve been booed before, and I’ll be booed again,” Nix said after the game. “Not going to be the last time. It’s obviously unfortunate. You don’t want your own fans booing you.”
Nix stopped short of saying that the boos weren’t deserved, though, because deep down inside, he probably knows that they were warranted. Nix looked like a backup quarterback against the Raiders, but his poor performance was saved by a dominant defensive effort. That has become a trend for Denver this season.
Nix completed 16 of his 28 attempts for 150 yards against Vegas, with many of the completions coming on check downs. He threw one touchdown, but had two interceptions and finished the game with a rating of 52.4. The offense as a whole never found a rhythm and mustered just 10 points against a vulnerable defense.
So, as much as Broncos fans might want to celebrate their current seven-game winning streak, it’s tough to feel too confident about the team’s chances moving forward with the offense struggling to produce points consistently. This isn’t lost on Nix. He knows that offensive improvement starts with him, and he knows he needs to be better.
“I think you got to stay level-headed and understand it is the NFL and seven wins are hard to come by, so you’re doing something right,” Nix said. “But at the same time, you’re also doing something wrong because there’s plenty left on the table, I think. Between penalties and just some sluggish football, we’re just not playing very good.
“It starts with me. I got to be better, and the rest of the guys will follow along. We got to find some juice somewhere. We got to find something, especially against a good defense like that. There’re plays to be had, we just got to find them.”
Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins summed up what all Broncos fans were thinking after the win over the Raiders.
"Yeah, cool, we're 8-2 ... [but] the defense is winning us the games and we're not helping them, we're not doing them any justice," Dobbins said. "I feel bad the way we play on offense and the way they play on defense, because they're doing so great and we're doing so bad.”
Dobbins understood the boos from frustrated fans who want to see more from a talented offense.
"I mean, they should [boo], they should," he said. "We're not very good at times. They should be mad because we have so much talent. We've got to figure it out ... and we will."
The Broncos have to figure things out offensive in short order, because they have a tough stretch of schedule to close out the season that includes games against the Packers, Jaguars, Chargers and two games against the Chiefs. Denver’s playoff hopes hinges on those games, and they’ll be exceedingly difficult to win if they can’t muster more than 10 points.
