Created by Randy Huggins, Black Mafia Family (BMF) is a crime-drama series that premiered in September 2021 on Starz. However, as of October 2025, the series has been canceled after four seasons despite season 4 ending on a cliffhanger. It was executive-produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

The show centers on the true story of brothers Demetrius Flenory and Terry Flenory as they form one of the most influential crime families in the United States. It chronicles the journey of the Flenory brothers from the streets of Southwest Detroit in the 1980s as they build a drug and money laundering operation that spreads across the country.

BMF explores their rise to power, along with the family dynamics and challenges that ultimately lead to their collapse. It was renewed three times, with season 4 running from June 2025 to August 2025.

The network's CEO, Jeffrey Hirsch, reportedly hinted at the possibility of the show's cancellation in an interview with Deadline, dated March 12, 2024. The decision might have resulted from the company’s strategy to develop new shows to keep costs down, given the rising production costs of ongoing ones.

“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons," the CEO said.

However, according to the outlet's report dated October 29, 2025, the show's future may have also been affected by the strained relationship between executive producer 50 Cent and the real-life Big Meech. The feud reportedly began after the Big Meech's release from prison in 2024.

Despite the season 4 finale ending on a big cliffhanger with Big Meech being arrested by Detective Von Bryant, BMF will not be returning for a fifth season, as Starz has officially canceled the series.

The writing seemed to be on the wall for the crime-drama series, as Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch revealed his disappointment over the fourth season's “underperformance”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“[Season four] resulted in modest sequential declines in OTT subscribers and revenue,” Hirsch said.

In an interview with Deadline in March 2024, prior to the release of season 4, the Starz CEO stated that the company’s strategy was changing. He used BMF as an example during the interview and discussed how production costs could be reduced by launching a new show instead of renewing an existing one.

“And so when you bring a BMF on — you know, BMF will be probably one of our two biggest shows, okay, it looks a lot like Power, it cost half as much, right? You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘Okay, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost’,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch further emphasized that Starz knew exactly what their viewers and user base wanted and were thus not losing out on viewers if they canceled existing shows and produced new ones. He revealed that the data showed they would get an uptick in revenue while maintaining their user base.

“Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership, because we know what those demos want. And we know how to line those up. And so that’s really the core of getting to that 20% [margin] — turning that slate over with fresh content to drive the business,” Hirsch remarked.

About BMF season 4

youtube-cover

Season 4 of Black Mafia Family continues the journey of the brothers Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory and Terry "Southwest T" Flenory. The two fight to keep their criminal empire stable and thriving while battling threats from fellow criminal rivals and law enforcement.

The brothers also aim to enhance their legitimate business interests by establishing Stomping Ground Records, a music label that focuses on signing emerging R&B stars. It runs parallel to real-life BMF's move into the entertainment industry.

Another storyline focuses on Detective Bryant and his ruthless, as well as relentless, pursuit of the Black Mafia Family, which eventually culminates in the season 4 cliffhanger.

That sees Big Meech arrested in the season finale by Detective Bryant. The ending leaves the situation unresolved, as Starz has canceled the series.

BMF is currently streaming on Starz.
