Toronto Blue Jays ace Trey Yesavage turned heads after he made his MLB debut in September. The right-hander was an integral part of the 2025 postseason rotation that took the Blue Jays to the World Series for the first time this century.
Big things were expected from Yesavage in 2026. Despite his season start delayed to April 28 due to a right shoulder impingement in Spring Training, he has started to be everything many envisioned.
In his first start back, he pitched 5.1 scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox. He followed it up with four frames each against the Minnesota Twins and the LA Angels, giving up only one earned run across those two starts. His workload was increased in his fourth start of the season against the Detroit Tigers. There, the 22-year-old threw six innings for two earned runs.
Most recently, on Wednesday, he pitched six scoreless frames against the New York Yankees. He gave up just two hits and punched out eight hitters. Thanks to his excellent outing, the Blue Jays walked away with a narrow 2-1 victory.
Over five starts so far, Yesavage has struck out 29 hitters against just eight walks. Interestingly, after 25.1 innings, his ERA and WHIP are identical: 1.07.

What makes this rare statistical line special is that it shows Yesavage has managed weak contact from hitters, with most of them producing swings and misses against him at a high clip. Credit to the Blue Jays, too, as they allowed the pitcher to develop rather than rushing him into the rotation.
The Blue Jays are not having the best of a season. Even though they made the World Series last year, their offense and pitching have not been able to sustain that level of performance this early in the season.
However, Yesavage's performance yesterday might have raised hope among the Blue Jays.
