Portland Fire make ruthless roster move after Fever loss

1 hour ago 3

The Portland Fire are already proving they are willing to make difficult decisions quickly. Less than 24 hours after a frustrating 90-73 loss to the Indiana Fever, Portland dramatically reshaped its roster by waiving three players in a single day, signaling just how urgent the expansion franchise views its early-season development.

Among the cuts, none stood out more than guard Sug Sutton. Sutton had actually been one of Portland’s more productive offensive players during her brief stint with the team, including a strong 14-point, four-assist performance against Indiana on Wednesday night. Across three appearances, she averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 assists while helping stabilize stretches of the Fire offense.

That made Thursday’s announcement especially surprising. Portland also waived forward Kamiah Smalls and guard Haley Jones as the organization continued aggressively evaluating its inaugural roster.

Portland is already operating with urgency

Expansion teams rarely have the luxury of patience, and the Fire are showing that reality immediately. At 2-3 through their first five games, Portland has flashed moments of competitiveness but has also struggled with consistency on both ends of the floor. Wednesday’s loss highlighted several of those issues, particularly defensively, as Aliyah Boston dominated inside with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

Even without Caitlin Clark available because of her back injury, Indiana controlled the game for long stretches thanks to superior ball movement and interior efficiency. For Portland, the response was immediate roster turnover.

The franchise announced the additions of German forward Frieda Buhner and English guard Holly Winterburn on standard contracts while also signing guard Jordan Harrison to a developmental deal. The moves reinforce how aggressively Portland appears to be searching for the right mix around its core group.

Haley Jones departure stands out long term

While Sutton’s release generated the biggest immediate reaction, Jones being waived could carry long-term implications. The former Stanford star arrived in Portland through the expansion draft after previously spending time with the Dallas Wings. Jones has long been viewed as one of the league’s more versatile young players because of her size, playmaking ability, and defensive upside.

But through five games with Portland, she averaged just 5.2 points in limited minutes while struggling to carve out a consistent role offensively. For a brand-new franchise still trying to establish its identity, potential alone may not have been enough.

Fire are learning how unforgiving expansion can be

The reality of building a WNBA expansion team is becoming clear quickly for Portland. There are few easy nights, little roster stability, and constant pressure to identify contributors immediately. The Fire entered the season as one of the league’s most intriguing stories, but Thursday’s roster shakeup showed just how ruthless expansion basketball can become when results are not arriving fast enough.

Now Portland heads into Saturday’s matchup against the Toronto Tempo with a significantly different roster than the one that walked off the floor against Indiana.
