Blue Jays predicted to replace injured Cody Ponce with $7 million two-time All-Star free agent

The Toronto Blue Jays just suffered another huge injury to their rotation, with Cody Ponce being sent to the IL after spraining his ACL, and has surgery on the table. Toronto is now down four starters with Ponce, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage all on the IL.

With this in mind, they need to find a replacement externally, and they don’t really have anyone internally that fits the bill. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman predicts that the Jays sign a free agent that has All-Star level talent in Tyler Anderson.

“Tyler Anderson's three-year Los Angeles Angels stint brought more downs than ups, but he was an All-Star in 2024 and made at least 25 starts in each of his three years in Anaheim. He's reliable when it comes to taking the ball every fifth day, and with an improved team (and defense) behind him, there's reason to believe the results can be better than they were in 2025. Anderson didn't excel in a lot of areas, but he did rank in the 80th percentile in hard-hit rate in 2025. Forcing soft contact with an elite defensive team behind him can lead to success. This is a flier worth taking given the position Toronto is currently in,” Rotman wrote.

This past season, Anderson posted a 2-8 record, a 4.56 ERA, 104 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.408 in 136 innings pitched. However, just the season before, he earned his second All-Star nod with a record of 10-15, a 3.81 ERA, 142 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.288 in 179 innings pitched.

He’d also be cheap. His market value calls for a one-year, $7 million deal, and for a big-spender like Toronto, that’s easy money.

To be fair to Anderson, his last year could be attributed to being on the Los Angeles Angels. With a World Series runner-up roster behind him, he could be exactly what the Blue Jays need at the end of their rotation.
