The Toronto Blue Jays came up inches short of a third World Series title this season, and now they need to go into the offseason making sure they can finally get over the hump. With the possible departure of Bo Bichette, landing a superstar is a must.
Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells believes that if Bichette does leave, there’s a stud shortstop Toronto could pursue: five-time All-Star and two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager.
“Now, the Blue Jays find themselves in a position where they need to figure out what they are going to do at shortstop. Bo Bichette is a free agent at the age of 27 and coming off a strong season. Even though the potential of Toronto retaining a homegrown talent like Bichette would make for a nice story, Seager is arguably a better all-around player right now. The one drawback is Seager is four years older than Bichette, so the Blue Jays would be sacrificing some of their long-term future. But they were so close to a title this season and figure to be among the best teams in the AL again next season that they can afford to have some tunnel vision if the opportunity to acquire Seager were to present itself,” Wells wrote.
This past season, Seager slashed .271/.373/.487/.860 with 19 doubles, 21 home runs, and 50 RBI in 102 games played. While he doesn’t have the contact of Bichette, he makes up for it with increased power.
Seager is, overall, a better defender as well. Bichette is one of the worst defensive shortstops in the league, with a -13 OAA, while Seager has a four OAA. Overall, Seager is just a better player, with more accolades to prove it.
As long as the Jays are ok with getting older at shortstop, pursuing Seager should be a top priority. Hopefully, they get talks started with the Texas Rangers as soon as they can.
