Blue Jays predicted to cut ties with $70.5 million fan favorite for CBA reason

The new CBA in Major League Baseball will cause problems for many teams if things go the way owners want. Major League Baseball's players' union is attempting to push back on the decision, and I agree with them in that regard.

There's no reason baseball should have a salary cap; if anything, we need teams to start spending more, not less. Having a salary cap doesn't help anybody but cheap owners.

However, if it goes through and teams have to move on from guys, we're going to see many impacted, including the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays would have to cut some salary, and Andres Gimenez was recently floated as an option who could be impacted by that.

“Remaining contract: 3 years, $70.5 million + $23 million club option

“Andres Gimenez might not hit much, but his defense makes him a valuable player for the Toronto Blue Jays,” Zachary Rotman wrote.

“His 6 OAA is tied for fourth among all qualified shortstops, and somehow, it feels like he's even better than that. but while his defense would be tough to lose, can the Jays commit to paying him an average of $23.5 million over the next three years in a capped system?”

Gimenez has been a nice little player for the Blue Jays over the past few years, though his $70.5 million deal and $23 million club option don't help his case at all.

He's a below-average offensive player, which might make it easier for Toronto to move on from him rather than some other expensive players on the team.
