Blue Jays-Marlins trade pitch sends $56M Cy Young winner to Toronto, rejuvenates World Series hopes

The Toronto Blue Jays continue to receive bad news regarding their pitching staff as the season progresses. Players like Cody Ponce, Max Scherzer, and several others have already spent time on the injured list.

Earlier this week, Toronto found out they may not get starting pitcher Jose Berrios back at all this season due to injury. What has already been a nightmare start to the year continues to get worse.

“Jose Berrios to have surgery Wednesday performed by Dr. Meister. Repair existing injury (stress fracture on elbow). There is some concern about ligament - they’ll determine whether he’s done for season whether ligament needs repairing,” Blue Jays broadcaster Hazel Mae posted.

The Blue Jays were just one win away from winning the World Series. If they want to get back to that point in October, Toronto is going to have to trade for a high-level starting pitcher. One player who makes plenty of sense is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara.

“This is much more of a pipe dream. If Alcántara is going to get traded, it would likely be closer to August. But the Blue Jays need a hurler now and Alcántara is a superstar. The Blue Jays should give the Miami Marlins a call,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.

Alcantara is expected to be one of the biggest names available at the trade deadline. The right-hander could finally have the opportunity to spread his wings with another organization.

“It's early, but Sandy Alcantara seems like the most likely player to be traded at the deadline. The Marlins are 9.5 games out of the NL East race, currently tied with the Nationals and Phillies. I do not see Miami winning that battle given the resources available to them. Ideally, this ownership group would invest in the roster, but that's a longshot. Instead, the Marlins will do what they always do — dump proven, talented veterans to contending teams for cheaper prospect capital,” FanSided’s Mark Powell wrote.

The Blue Jays would be acquiring a pitcher who appears to be close to returning to the Cy Young form he displayed not too long ago. He is also an All-Star who already proved himself before suffering his injury.

Alcantara is currently on a $56 million contract with the Marlins and also has a club option for next season. If the Blue Jays are able to land Alcantara, it would create a massive boost of confidence and excitement inside the clubhouse.
