The Toronto Blue Jays are facing some issues to their pitching staff, as veteran starter Jose Berrios won’t be ready for the start of the season. With Opening Day just about a week away, Toronto will now have to fix its rotation plans and lean on its depth sooner than expected.
Berrios isn’t the ace that he once was, but the’s been able to stay on the mound. The Blue Jays, looking to make another World Series, will need everyone to help to keep others healthy.
Berrios’ situation became more serious following further testing. It initially appeared to be elbow discomfort, but it has now been said to be a bigger issue. According to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, the Blue Jays said that Berrios has a stress fracture in his throwing elbow.
“The Toronto Blue Jays are going to need to adjust their starting rotation for the start of the season. Jose Berrios won't be available when the season kicks off next week, the team said Wednesday, per Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling. Berrios was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right elbow after meeting with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas.
“The right-hander was scratched from his spring-training start last week because of elbow inflammation,” Sportsnet wrote.
This news puts immediate pressure on Toronto’s pitching depth. Whether it’s a younger arm stepping into the rotation or a few bullpen game approaches early on, the Blue Jays will need to find a solution while also being smar with its arms.
