Blue Jays get unfortunate Trey Yesavage update after surgery that could be season-ending

The Toronto Blue Jays are 57-63 on the season. They sold some of their expiring contracts at the MLB trade deadline, and they're sitting at the bottom of the AL East. And yet, they're still in the postseason hunt.

Just 3.5 games back of the third Wild Card spot, the year's not over for the Blue Jays just yet. But, they got some tough news on Tuesday before their second of four games against the Boston Red Sox.

According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Trey Yesavage had surgery to repair his left meniscus, and he's not at risk of missing the rest of the regular season.

"News: Trey Yesavage had surgery to repair his left meniscus," Matheson reports. "The Blue Jays are not ruling him out for the year, and will evaluate him over the next few weeks. It will obviously depend on how competitive they are down the stretch, too."

Not long after the trade deadline passed, Yesavage was revealed to have meniscus damage in his left knee, and he was placed on the injured list.

He has not had surgery on his left knee and is going to miss a good amount more time this season. But it might not be season-ending.

That is, if the Blue Jays can hang around in the Wild Card race. If they falter and are further back than they are now, down the home stretch of the regular season, they might have to admit Yesavage's season is over to avoid risking further injury in a lost season.

This season for the Blue Jays, Yesavage posted 2.1 bWAR in 18 starts with a 3.65 ERA, 5-5 record, 91 strikeouts, 10 home runs allowed, a 122 ERA+, and a 1.142 WHIP in 93.2 innings of work in his first full season in the Majors after 14 innings in 2025.

The 23-year-old has looked great in his early MLB career so far, but he's now slated to miss some time due to this knee surgery.

It's potentially season-ending for Yesavage, though as Matheson notes, he could come back for a postseason push if his recovery goes well, and the Blue Jays are still fighting for a spot in September.
