Blue Jays get good news on potential Max Scherzer reunion

1 hour ago 2

The Toronto Blue Jays have added a ton of talent this offseason, but they did lose a few players in Chris Bassitt and Bo Bichette.

Another possible starting pitcher, Max Scherzer, is still a free agent, and he, too, could be signed by another team. But a new report might suggest such a future won't happen.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet, the Blue Jays and Scherzer are reportedly in serious contract talks. This is some great news, as the Blue Jays and the future Hall of Famer might reunite this offseason.

Blue Jays in serious contract talks with Max Scherzer

"While nothing is finalized, the Blue Jays' talks with Max Scherzer have gotten more serious in the last week per industry sources," Nicholson-Smith reports.

This report also mentions that other teams are in the mix for Scherzer, but as of now, the Blue Jays are the clear favorite for the future Hall of Famer.

The 41-year-old right-hander spent the 2025 season with the Blue Jays, where he posted a 5.19 ERA in the regular season across 17 starts, then posted a 3.77 ERA in three starts during the Blue Jays run to the World Series.

In his MLB career, Scherzer has a 3.22 career ERA with 221 wins, 74.7 bWAR, 12 complete games, 3,489 strikeouts, and three Cy Young awards to go with eight All-Star nods and two World Series titles.

While the Blue Jays might not need Scherzer to be a core member of their rotation, especially after their active offseason, bringing in Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and getting Shane Bieber back, he could be great depth.

Scherzer returning to the Blue Jays for his 19th in the Majors is on the table, and as Nicholson-Smith reports, while not final, the talks are in a good place for Scherzer to return to Toronto on a one-year deal.
