Will Cillian Murphy Play Voldemort in ‘Harry Potter’ Series? He Says...
Tommy Shelby is back—and this time, not by order of the Peaky Blinders.
After all, the gangster (played by Cillian Murphy) who once helmed the powerful gang has returned from his seven-year self-imposed exile to stop its new leader—his illegitimate son Duke Shelby (Barry Keoghan)—in the upcoming film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
Set in 1940, Ada Shelby (Sophie Rundle) reveals to her brother that Duke has been "running Peaky Blinders like it's 1919 all over again." Tommy isn't sure he can step back into that world of crime, saying in the trailer released Feb. 19, "I can't help him because I'm not that man anymore."
But whether he is or isn't, the fate of the U.K. could rest in his hands. In the film—which premieres in select theaters March 6 and streams on Netflix March 20—Duke has gotten himself entangled with the Nazi party amid the chaos of WWII thanks to British Fascist sympathizer Beckett (Tim Roth).
"I need to know that you are willing to take part in an act of treason," Beckett says in a private meeting with the current gang leader, "that will decide this war for Germany."
As for where Duke—who was first introduced in Peaky Blinders' sixth and final season—stands morally? As he put it, "The world doesn't give a f--k about me and I don't give a f--k about the world."
So, although Tommy initially decided this wasn't his war to fight, he tells Hayden Stagg (Stephen Graham), "It is now."
But don't expect the family reunion to be heartwarming. After all, Tommy, who appears to be covered in soot, meets Duke at the Garrison, where the pair share an awkward silence followed by a much-needed shot of whiskey.
As the trailer concludes, Tommy reflects, "Once, I nearly got f--king everything. But nearly doesn't count."
So what does Tommy's return to his old stomping ground look like after leaving his family behind in the series finale?
"When we meet him, he's as broken as he has been," Cillian told Netflix's Tudum in an interview published Feb. 19. "He's just medicating and living in this purgatory that he's created for himself in this big old house. He's in this liminal space, not really living, he's not really dead. He's ignoring the world, he's ignoring his family."
While fans wait to see Cillian put his cap back on—complete with its sewn-in razor blades—keep reading for more movies coming out this year.
