MLB analyst puts the spotlight on the Athletics' young arm to step up

1 hour ago 3

When talking about the Athletics last season, it was all about what their offense was doing. Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, and others had no problem crushing the ball over the fence and pushing runs across the board.

However, the pitching staff was something that let the team down. They finished the regular season with a team ERA of 4.70, which placed them 27th across MLB.

Without a doubt, the pitching staff will have to step it up this upcoming season. They cannot leave their position players high and dry just like they did last season.

MLB analyst puts the spotlight on the Athletics' young arm to step up

The A's did acquire some arms over the offseason, but none were considered a big splash. They signed Aaron Civale to hopefully help bolster the starting rotation.

Outside of that, the club acquired Mark Leiter Jr. and Scott Barlow on one-year deals to help strengthen the bullpen.

Even with Civale, the spotlight is on the starting rotation. They need someone to step up this season, and Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter puts the pressure on Luis Morales to be that guy.

"Morales has a Top 100 pedigree, a starter's frame, and electric stuff with a fastball that averaged 98 mph and a sweeper that generated a 38.0 percent whiff rate. The Athletics need impact starters in the worst way, and he is their most promising young arm entering the 2026 season."

Morales is coming off a year where he made his MLB debut in August. He went on to start 10 games, compiling a 4-3 record with a 3.14 ERA.

Since he has already gotten his cup of coffee, he knows what to expect at this level. With a full winter to get ready for his role, don't be surprised if Morales comes out leading this rotation in 2026.
