Dylan Cease already had a changeup, but not one that looked like this.
The Toronto Blue Jays' $210 million signing captured plenty of hype for his incredible debut on Saturday, but it's how he did it that should be even more exciting for Canadian baseball fans.
Cease showed off a brand new changeup. It behaves nothing like the pitch Cease used to throw as his changeup.
Baseball analyst Lance Brozdowski posted on X to write that Cease's changeup has averaged below 80 miles per hour for five consecutive seasons.
On Saturday, it averaged 83.7 miles per hour and Cease threw it pretty frequently.
How has nobody posted this lovely video of Dylan Cease's new changeup? #BlueJays
For 5 long years, the pitch sat below 80 mph. It averaged 83.7 mph tonight, and he threw it 15% to lefties.

That's definitely an immense development for the Blue Jays. Toronto clearly wanted Cease this offseason, making him the first notable pitcher to sign a contract, and giving him $30 million per year for seven seasons.
For Cease to then arrive with a new and improved pitch makes things that much better for the Blue Jays. He clearly wants to continue to improve, and with a changeup like this, Cease could have a big season ahead.
