Blue Jays are 'nightmare' trade destination for Mets' 3.55 ERA All-Star

With all the injuries to their starting rotation, targeting pitchers at the trade deadline would be a logical move for the Toronto Blue Jays to make.

But some trade targets make more sense for Toronto's roster than others.

FanSided's Chris Landers argues that the Blue Jays would be a "nightmare" landing spot for an All-Star pitcher from the New York Mets. The right-hander was involved in a trade this past offseason but could be on the move again.

"But for as good as he's been throughout his career, he has one glaring hole in his profile: an inability to pitch deep into games," Landers wrote about the Mets' Freddy Peralta. "Peralta has pitched beyond the fifth inning in just seven of his 12 starts so far this season, a trend that's held true in prior years as well."

Given the state of the Blue Jays' bullpen, Peralta's potential fit with the reigning American League champions is not a perfect one.

"If you're going to get the most out of Peralta, you need to have a deep and reliable bullpen behind him to pick up the slack," Landers added. "The Blue Jays are ... neither of those things right now, with precious few reliable high-leverage options behind new closer Louis Varland and veteran righty Tyler Rogers."

If the Blue Jays decided to look past Peralta's struggles to pitch deep into ballgames, they would be acquiring one of the top players in the trade market.

He has surpassed 200 strikeouts in each of the past three seasons, and a fifth-place finish in last year's NL Cy Young voting is nothing to disregard.

Regardless of Landers' questions about the length Peralta can provide, the Blue Jays would be foolish not to at least entertain the idea of the trade with the Mets.
