Bills' new head coach news features Philip Rivers

The Buffalo Bills need a new head coach.

And the newest guy they plan to bring into the interview room is Philip Rivers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news on Friday morning: On a busy day for interviews for Buffalo, one of them will be the recently re-retired quarterback Rivers.

Rivers was right back in the NFL spotlight at the end of the 2025 season when, at the age of 44, he came back from a nearly five-year absence to try and quarterback the Indianapolis Colts into the playoffs.

The gunslinger didn't play poorly, but the Colts came up a little short, ending his NFL career, again.

Rivers has been involved in head coach rumors this offseason despite never having been on an NFL coaching staff.

Prior to his return to the Colts, Rivers was (and now is again) the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama. His son, Gunner, is his quarterback and a high-ranking college recruit with one more season to play at the high school level.

Rivers clearly relished the opportunity to return and play for the Colts at the end of the season. He shared real emotions in press conferences, and on the sideline, he was patrolling like he was still wearing his St. Michael coaching hat.

The Bills are bringing in a long list of names to interview to replace the fired Sean McDermott, most of them offensive-minded guys, like Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel.

Rivers would be an outside-the-box hire, but maybe that's exactly what the Bills need to finally get to a Super Bowl, and potentially win it, with superstar quarterback Josh Allen.

If Rivers didn't want to give this a shot, he wouldn't have even taken the interview. This has officially become the most intriguing possibility in the Bills' head-coaching search.
