Bills face huge $19 million decision on underrated star

1 hour ago 2

The Buffalo Bills will have plenty of key decisions to make in Joe Brady's first offseason as head coach, and one of them might involve a player no one is even thinking about.

With all the storylines involving the Bills' need to get Allen a No. 1 receiver, which the franchise will have to do by the way, there are other needs that have to be addressed as well.

But this one involves a player who has flown under the radar in his two seasons in Buffalo, and now that he is a free agent, a decision must be made about his future.

However, it will be pricey. And that's guard David Edwards.

For NFL.com's Kevin Patra, he questions whether Edwards will be worth what could be a huge contract coming his way this offseason.

"Edwards has been a bargain for the Bills the last two years and is coming off his best season, helping open up holes on the ground for James Cook," Patra wrote. "After all, last year's top two free-agent guards -- Trey Smith and Will Fries -- signed multi-year deals with average annual values of $23 million and $17.5 million, respectively. Edwards is a rock-solid guard, but is he worth Joe Thuney-type money?"

Bills face tough Edwards decision

Will the Bills be content playing between $17 and $23 million APY for Edwards? That is a lot of money, but he is a key piece of the offensive line that helped pave running lanes for James Cook.

Spotrac.com has Edwards' market value at $19.9 million APY, and if that is what David is after (he has every right to ask for it), then the Bills might be looking for another guard this offseason.

With Allen in his prime, the need to keep his protection together, not to mention one of the driving forces behind the stellar run game, is key.

But it appears it will require some serious salary cap massaging to get it done.
