Bears urged to cut new $2.5 million playmaker before season

The Chicago Bears made an interesting pick during the first round of the NFL Draft, selecting Michigan tight end Colston Loveland at No. 10.

It wasn't a shock that the Bears went with a tight end, but it seemed more likely that Penn State's Tyler Warren would be the first player selected from the tight end group.

Loveland is expected to have a big season, along with veteran tight end Cole Kmet, and Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report thinks new tight end pickup Durham Smythe could be cut before the season starts.

"Durham Smythe had a solid season for the Dolphins in 2023, finishing with 35 catches and 366 yards. However, he took a back seat to Jonnu Smith last season and looked for a new opportunity with the Chicago Bears this offseason," Knox wrote."Unfortunately for Smythe, the Bears already employ Cole Kmet and just used a top-10 pick on Colston Loveland. Smythe now finds himself as TE3 on Chicago's depth chart, at best, and the Bears could save $1 million by releasing him."

The Bears signed Smythe to a one-year, $2.5 million deal this offseason, and he was expected to be the No. 2 tight end. However, after the Loveland draft pick, there's now a chance the 29-year-old tight end won't be on the roster this fall.
