Bears projected to hire top Commanders assistant, 'opposite' of Matt Eberflus as HC

If there's one thing the Chicago Bears are sure to do in their head coaching search, it's bring in someone who thinks differently than Matt Eberflus.

Eberflus was fired in November midway through his third season as the Bears' head coach, when it became clear that the first-time head coach had major situational shortcomings. Plus, Eberflus came from a defensive background, and the Bears now have to prioritize the development of quarterback Caleb Williams.

What if Chicago were to hire an offensive mind with previous experience coaching Williams?

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports recently projected head coach candidates for each team with an opening based on "opposite" backgrounds of the coaches they fired.

In the article, Edwards named Washington Commanders offensive coordinator and former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as the top fit for the Bears.

"If (the Bears) were looking for a candidate with the opposite background (of Eberflus), it would be an offensive coach who is not going to be a head coach for the first time," Edwards wrote.

"Kingsbury has prior experience as an NFL head coach with the Cardinals. He also has a working relationship with last year's number-one overall selection in Caleb Williams, dating back to the two working together at USC."

If Kingsbury were hired, the hope would be that he learned from his struggles with the Cardinals, where he was brought in to mentor another former number-one pick, Kyler Murray. Arizona went 27-38-1 during his tenure, and Murray still hasn't fully blossomed into a star.

Hiring a retread coach can either make a team look like geniuses or fools, because they're sticking their neck out for someone who "failed" in some regard in a prior job. But with experience comes wisdom, and perhaps Kingsbury has a plan to avoid the pitfalls in his second go-around.
