Bears predicted to land Chiefs $74 million superstar in blockbuster signing

The Chicago Bears may be in a world of hurt now, but help could be on the way soon enough.

Following their disastrous loss to the Green Bay Packers on a blocked field goal, the Bears have dropped to 4-6 on the season, mired in a four-game losing streak. What was once a promising year in Chicago appears to have fully gone off the rails.

While the playoffs may be out of the question, the Bears have the opportunity to fix a massive weakness once free agency opens in the spring. The offensive line has done a horrific job protecting rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but the free-agent class is loaded with line talent.

Recently, Bleacher Report's Matt Holder predicted that the Bears would land some marquee help for their tattered line group. Holder named Kansas City Chiefs star left guard Trey Smith as the top free-agent fit for Chicago this upcoming spring.

"Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith—the second-ranked player on B/R's early 2025 free-agent board—should be high atop Chicago's wish list. He's an above-average pass protector and a legitimate catalyst in the running game," Holder said.

"Smith will undoubtedly command a (hefty) contract on the open market—if the Chiefs even allow him to get there—but at 25 years old, he has the potential to be a franchise building block."

In his four years with Kansas City, Smith has been as reliable as any lineman on any team. He's missed only one game, has a blown block rate of only 2.8%, and has accounted for 101 total points earned, per Sports Info Solutions.

Smith is projected for a four-year, $74 million contract by Spotrac, which should help the Bears' case to keep him over the Chiefs, who are more strapped for cash.

It's time for Chicago to flex its muscle in free agency, and Smith would help them add even more muscle in 2025.
