Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae opens up on his mistakes and injury struggles

4 hours ago 1

Bayern Munich have struggled with a leaky defence throughout the season. Their issues in the backline are mostly due to the injuries that they have suffered throughout the season.

While the Rekordmeister are all set to bring the Bundesliga crown back to Bavaria, they crashed out of the Champions League quarter-final due to their dodgy defence.

While players like Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies have been on the sidelines in the business end of the season, defensive stalwart Kim Min-jae also played through his Achilles issue, which has hampered his performances throughout the season.

Kim's injury issue became a topic of discussion among fans and experts, especially after reports highlighted his extreme workload this season. South Korea national team coach, Hong Myung-bo, openly criticised Bayern Munich for their unfair treatment of the defender.

Later, Bayern's director of sport, Max Eberl, defended the club's stance on the entire situation. He highlighted that the issues were never a threat to his health.

Despite all the talk, Kim has had a tough time dealing with an injury and yet turning up every week. Therefore, he made a few mistakes which proved to be fatal for Vincent Kompany's men.

What did Kim say about his mistakes and injury issues?

The former Napoli man highlighted that the Achilles tendon issue is still present, and it has affected his performances. But he doesn't want to make excuses and rather wants to improve on his game.

"The Achilles tendon problem is still there. But I'm gritting my teeth, closing my eyes and getting through it," Kim told TZ's Philipp Kesler

Kim Min-jae speaks out on his physical problems and performances this season: "The Achilles tendon problem is still there. But I'm gritting my teeth, closing my eyes and getting through it. "Mistakes, injuries, or too many games – those are perhaps just excuses. I still have to stay focused. That's my job. I have to be able to deal with that. Mistakes were also caused by pain, of course. But ultimately, I should have played better," he continued.

Bayern may seal their Bundesliga title on matchday 32 when they will host RB Leipzig at Allianz Arena. This will be Kim's first Bundesliga title after joining the club in 2023.

The Bavarians finished third last season behind Bayer Leverkusen and Vfb Stuttgart. So it is a special moment for Kompany and their new players, who haven't experienced this moment during their Bayern tenure.

"They say that when you play for FC Bayern, titles are a given. But last season, when Leverkusen were unbeaten in the Bundesliga, we realized how difficult that is," Kim shared.

No matter what league you play in, you have to stay consistent. Munich doesn't guarantee titles. I'll be happy if we win the trophy in the next three games. I never would have believed I'd one day play for such a big club. I feel truly honoured," he concluded.

Despite winning the league title, the 28-year-old is heavily linked with Premier League clubs like Newcastle United and Chelsea. There is some interest from Saudi Arabia aswell.

So it remains to be seen where Kim ends up next season, or if he decides to prolong his journey Bavaria.
