Baker Mayfield praises 'mentally tough' Buccaneers after 29-27 Jets win

1 hour ago 3

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been getting the job done, but only just, but Todd Bowles' team sits pretty at the top of the NFC South standings with a 3-0 record.

Needing game-winning drives from Baker Mayfield in the first two weeks, Tampa needed another one against a plucky New York Jets team who were without Justin Fields, and Mayfield did as he has done this year, got it done.

He led a 10-play, 48-yard drive to set up the Buccaneers in field goal range, and Chase McLaughlin converted the 36-yard field goal to keep Tampa Bay's undefeated streak going.

And for Mayfield, even though it wasn't a good day in any of the three phases, he was left impressed by the team's resiliency.

“It's much of the same, resilient group,” Mayfield said. “We stick together and just the whole team, when one part of it, one phase of it a little bit down, others got to pick it up and be there for you, and that's what this team's all about. We support each other no matter what. But yeah, just it's a resilient, mentally tough group.”

Buccaneers set up undefeated Eagles showdown in Week 4

With both the Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles taking care of business in Week 3, it now sets up a huge NFC showdown in Week 4 as Nick Sirianni's team will come to Raymond James Stadium looking to hand Tampa its first loss of the season.

Surely the Buccaneers know that needing game-winning drives in all three weeks isn't a sustainable model, but while they are still figuring out Josh Grizzard's offense, at least they are winning.

Now the Eagles come to town in what will be Tampa's first proper test of the season, and we will see if Mayfield has to lead another game-winning drive.

The Buccaneers hope not, but if it comes down to it late in the fourth quarter, the team's fighting spirit and mental toughness will no doubt shine through.
