Australia’s Cristian Volpato allegedly tests positive for cocaine after speeding in post-World Cup drama

An Australian midfielder on the team’s World Cup squas allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped for speeding, per news.com.au.

Cristian Volpato, 22, was reportedly stopped in Sydney twice in the same night in his BMW.

After the second stop, in which he was caught driving 109 km/h in a 60-km/h zone (68 mph in a 37-mph zone), Volpato reportedly tested positive for cocaine.

He was also given a breathalyzer test, which he reportedly passed.

The Sassulo midfielder has seen his license suspended for six months.

According to the outlet, it is “understood” that Volpato has denied using drugs and turned in a negative test following an independent test.

The Australian soccer federation said: “Football Australia is aware of allegations involving one of our players.

“We have been in contact with the player and continue to monitor the matter and support the player throughout this process.”

Volpato started three of Australia’s four games in this summer’s World Cup as Australia made it out of the group stage to set up a Round of 32 matchup with Egypt.

The Soceroos fell to Egypt in a penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1 following extra time.

Volpato represented Italy at various youth levels before making his debut for Australia’s senior team last year.

He has also spent his senior club career playing in Italy, as he was previously with Roma before making the switch to Sassulo in 2023.

He played an increased role for the team last year as he appeared in 24 games (11 starts), scoring two goals and providing four assists.

Sassuolo will kick off their Serie A campaign on Aug. 23 vs. Atalanta.
