Athletics get exciting Nick Kurtz contract extension report from MLB insider

The Athletics might not have been the most active team in free agency or the trade market in recent years, but they have done one thing: extend their own players.

In recent years, Brent Rooker, Lawrence Butler, Tyler Soderstrom, and, most recently, Jacob Wilson have signed long-term extensions with the A's. The next big domino waiting to fall? It's obviously Nick Kurtz.

Fortunately for A's fans hoping to extend their superstar rookie slugger, according to MLB insider Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the Athletics have offered a contract extension to Kurtz this offseason.

Athletics offer Nick Kurtz long-term contract extension

"The A's have made a long-term extension offer to AL ROY Nick Kurtz, according to 2 sources," Sherman reports. "I received no word on the likelihood of getting it to the finish line."

Trying to extend Kurtz is a very easy decision for the Athletics to make. If they're willing to spend a lot on Wilson, Butler, and Soderstrom, Kurtz, their best player, is someone they should have no qualms about spending a future on.

The 22-year-old first baseman had a remarkable rookie season in 2025. Just a year after being drafted 4th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, Kurtz broke out in the Majors.

He had a .290 batting average with a .383 on-base percentage and a .619 slugging percentage, good for a 1.002 OPS, in his rookie year across 117 games.

Kurtz put up 5.4 bWAR in his debut season, hitting 36 home runs to go with 26 doubles, 122 hits, and 86 RBIs. He finished 12th in MVP voting and also won the AL Silver Slugger Award for first baseman.

"Big Amish" is one of the best young players in the Major Leagues, and someone the Athletics should try to lock up as soon as they can.

This report, that they've offered him an extension, is good news for the A's. While there's no telling if he's going to accept it, or if a deal will be worked out at all, the fact that the A's have made an offer is a good sign.
