A rumor about Wayne Gretzky has begun to circulate on social media.
It says that Gretzky wanted to go into Team Canada's locker room before the Olympic gold medal game against the United States and was denied the opportunity.
This is the post circulating the rumor:
Mike Commodore just confirmed on @FlamesNation Barn Burner Show that @WayneGretzky wanted to pump up Team Canada ahead of the Gold Medal Game vs Team USA but the President of @HockeyCanada Katherine Henderson said you aren’t welcome inside the locker room.
Wow, unreal. Hockey…

It's hard to believe given that Gretzky is the greatest player of all time, and a proud Canadian.
One of the reasons it's so hard to believe, though, is that it's not true.
The Athletic's Chris Johnston wrote this on X on Thursday afternoon:
"I'm told this is 100% untrue. There was never any request for Wayne Gretzky to come in the Team Canada room before Sunday's gold-medal game."
Sure, someone has to be right and someone has to be wrong here, but it feels safe to trust the national, plugged-in reporter Johnston.
It also makes sense that Gretzky would respect the sanctity of the gold medal game and of Canada's locker room and not disrupt that beforehand.
Maybe the Canadians needed a Gretzky chat, though, because the way they did things led to a 2-1 defeat to the U.S. in overtime. Even more, maybe they could've used him on the ice
