After a first-round bye, second seed Lorenzo Musetti will face three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka in the second round of the Hellenic Championship 2025.

After a decent hardcourt swing, which Musetti capped off with a fourth-round finish in Miami, he hit the ground running during the clay season. He finished as the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and made the last four in Madrid and Rome as well.

Musetti progressed to his maiden Major semifinal at the French Open, although an injury forced him to retire halfway through the match. He missed most of the grass swing and lost in the first round of Wimbledon upon his return. While he underperformed in the lead-up to the US Open, he still reached the quarterfinals in New York.

The Asian swing was fairly successful for Musetti, with a runner-up finish in Chengdu and a fourth-round appearance at the Shanghai Masters. He recently bowed out of the Paris Masters without winning a match.

While Musetti received a bye in Athens, Wawrinka was up against Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round. The Swiss got outplayed with ease in the opening set but stormed back to claim the second set in the tie-break. He claimed a competitive third set with a single break of serve in his favor for a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 comeback win.

Musetti has the opportunity to make his career-best season even better. One last spot at the ATP Finals is still up for grabs, and he can claim it by winning the title here. He was eighth in the race for the ATP Finals until last week, and was surpassed by Felix Auger-Aliassime with his run to the Paris Masters final.

Wawrinka has struggled a lot this year. Despite the hardships, he remained resilient to fight past van de Zandschulp. He improved his record at the ATP level to 4-13 with the win.

The odds of Wawrinka beating a top 10 player in his current form are quite slim. However, a champion of his caliber is still capable of pulling off a surprise. Musetti has a 41-19 record this year, and based on how they've performed so far, the Italian will be expected to win this contest.
