New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh is in a bit of a pickle. His franchise quarterback, Jaxson Dart, is out for the remainder of the regular season, and we're only in Week 3.
This is Harbaugh's chance to make a real first impression as the new head coach in New York, so the Dart injury really couldn't be worse. Now, the team is scrambling to figure out a quarterback solution for the 2026-27 season.
One name that's popped up is J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings. He's not starting this season, and he's basically sitting on the bench. There's been a lot of talk that McCarthy could go to New York, but is it warranted?
J.J. McCarthy doesn't seem like a fit for the Giants
The overwhelming consensus among NFL experts is that McCarthy won't go to the Giants.
Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post shared his thoughts on X on Wednesday, stating, "Never say never. But J.J. McCarthy is one available QB I cannot see #Giants pursuing."
Now, adding to that idea, Giants insider Dan Duggan of The Athletic also said that he doesn't see McCarthy being a fit for the Giants.
"The Giants scouted McCarthy heavily during the 2024 pre-draft process before taking wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth pick instead," Duggan stated in a feature out on Thursday. "That type of pedigree sticks with a player, even when the start of his career has been as rocky as McCarthy's."
He adds that considering McCarthy is fresh off losing a quarterback competition to Kyler Murray and also falling third on the Vikings' depth chart behind Carson Wentz, "even parting with one of the 2027 sixth-rounders or a late-round pick in a future draft for McCarthy seems wasteful. He'd need to come in and learn a new offense on the fly during the season."
So, it really doesn't make a ton of sense for the Giants to pursue McCarthy. Not that it won't happen, but as the days go on, it appears less likely.
