Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens has been a huge part of the NFL conversation all offseason, thanks to his lingering contract talks with the team. Well, now that the season has started, he's still in the limelight, but for a different reason.
During the 2025-26 season, Pickens averaged 15.4 yards per catch. He also snagged 22 catches of at least 20 yards. It was a massive showing and made him among the elite at his position in the entire NFL.
This season is a different story. He's only averaging 7.6 yards per catch. That's quite a hit.
But should Cowboys fans worry? Not yet.
George Pickens' slow start is considered a 'mirage'
On Thursday, Sept. 24, ESPN released a feature about the biggest surprises for each NFL franchise going into Week 3. For the Cowboys, it's Pickens' lack of production. But reporter Todd Archer assures fans that this concern is a "mirage."
"So far, opposing defenses are keeping the lid on Pickens, but he did have two drops in Week 1," he states. "After those drops against the Giants, Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer stressed everything with Pickens will be 'fine.' And a two-game sample hasn't changed that belief."
Two games is a really small snapshot in the NFL. The season is young. After Pickens' monster of a season last year, there's certainly reason to believe that he'll rebound and get back to the level where he was just one year ago. But, if this trend continues for several more games, the conversation will obviously change. Then, we can worry.
