Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian invested an estimated $45.9 million into football operations and roster retention this offseason. Arch Manning must deliver as Texas build out roster with transfer portal additions
CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford believes Manning sits at the exact center of this intense scrutiny. Enormous financial backing requires immediate results on the field this autumn. Anything short of playoff appearance would constitute major disappointment given extensive resources allocated to coaching staff and roster.
“It has to be Arch Manning or bust this season,” Crawford said. He stated the quarterback must produce Heisman finalist numbers for Texas to reach the College Football Playoff semifinals.
“He’s got to be a Heisman finalist-type production year from Arch for that Texas team to go from nine, ten wins to that 12 or 13 necessary to get to the CFP semifinals or better,” the analyst added.
The roster construction fully supports this lofty goal. Texas added Auburn receiver Cam Coleman and running back Hollywood Smothers through the portal. The offensive line features two future first round NFL prospects. Manning possesses elite weapons around him to succeed immediately.
“He has to be,” Crawford added. “He has to have a good start, though.” The schedule presents an early challenge against Ohio State in week two. Sarkisian previously built a loaded roster around Quinn Ewers but fell short in the semifinals.
Manning must improve second half consistency
Manning showed what he's capable of during the final six games of last season, throwing for 1,714 yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He also contributed 206 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground during that run. The Longhorns need that version of him from week one.
His early-season numbers told a different story. Manning threw five interceptions across his first seven games and struggled with accuracy throughout. New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp brings a fresh scheme that should ease some of that burden, but the offense still runs through Manning.
Sarkisian has made his intentions clear with this offseason's spending. The patient rebuilding approach is over as this is a championship-or-bust program now. Manning must validate that commitment with consistent, elite play from the opening week. The upcoming season will define his legacy in Austin.
