Lions could be ex-Eagles' Super Bowl champions' best landing spot in free agency

The Detroit Lions are heading into the first week of preseason in 2026 with a major question mark looming over the franchise at the center position.

Cade Mays is going to be out for a while, adding more question marks to an offensive line that already wasn't set-in-stone for 2026. Penei Sewell and Blake Miller at the tackles, and Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge at guard, make up the current OL.

But, there are still some questions about the OL and their depth. So, amid such a question mark, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton linked the Lions to former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion Mekhi Becton as his best landing spot in free agency.

"G Mekhi Becton: Detroit Lions," Moton writes. "... The Lions can re-establish their physical identity on the offensive side of the ball with the addition of Mekhi Becton, a 6'7'', 363-pounder who's transitioned from offensive tackle to guard."

Becton, the 27-year-old offensive guard, won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2024 as their starting right guard. He was a mauler in the run game and wasn't a bad blocker in the pass game either.

However, there is one issue with Becton being linked to the Lions. Beyond the fact that the Lions really need to upgrade their center spot now with Mays' injury, Becton struggled a lot last year for the Los Angeles Chargers.

He allowed three sacks and 36 total pressures, going along with a brutal 79th out of 81 grade among all offensive guards according to Pro Football Focus.

Becton was one of the worst guards in the NFL last season, but the Lions could still take a chance on him as either depth or competition to start over Mahogany.

He might not be an ideal pickup for the Lions, but the upside with Becton, as seen during his Super Bowl run with the Eagles, is high enough that some team should take a chance on him.

The Lions, with their shaky offensive line, have reason to take the flyer on Becton. Even if he doesn't start, the potential for the 59-game starter who's gone from tackle to guard is something worth taking a chance on.
