Angels release former Blue Jays All-Star pitcher with 15.43 ERA

The Los Angeles Angels are on their way to an 11th consecutive losing season. 

Poor decision-making from the front office is a significant reason.

Over the years, the Angels have made over a dozen questionable signings, with their most recent one failing to regain his old form in the minors. 

According to The Athletic's Sam Blum, the AL West club released right-hander Alek Manoah on Wednesday. The former Toronto Blue Jays All-Star signed a $1.95 million guaranteed contract with the Angels during the offseason. 

Manoah's minor league performance was less than impressive. In 11 starts between Triple-A and Single-A, he posted an ugly combined ERA of 15.43. 

When he was finally promoted to the Angels, Manoah's odds of making a strong Major League comeback fell short.

On May 16 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Manoah allowed eight earned runs in 1.1 innings, with his fastball averaging just 87 mph. 

That outing was Manoah's last in an Angels uniform after starting the season on the IL with a fingernail issue.

Injuries have been a lingering issue for Manoah, who underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2024 and missed the entire 2025 season.

The 28-year-old's best MLB season came in 2022 with the Blue Jays. He earned an All-Star selection and finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting while posting a 2.24 ERA in 31 starts.  

Those days are far behind him now. Given his poor stint with the Angels, his next gig in professional baseball may be hard to find.
