Cavs predicted to pass on Jonathan Kuminga, trade for $80M NBA champion in 4-team blockbuster

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been in an all-out battle with the Los Angeles Lakers for restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. It has been a difficult process for both Cleveland and Los Angeles, as the former NBA champion is seeking a significant contract.

Last summer, the Golden State Warriors found themselves in a difficult situation trying to negotiate a deal with Kuminga. This offseason, the young wing is once again looking for a major payday.

“Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic. Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.

Despite the Lakers being heavily involved, the Cavaliers have not backed down in their pursuit of Kuminga. Cleveland is exploring every possible avenue to get a deal done and is expected to meet with Kuminga in an effort to find common ground.

“The Cavaliers will meet with Jonathan Kuminga about working towards finalizing a potential sign-and-trade agreement soon, per Chris Fedor. Cleveland is a main finalist for Kuminga's services alongside the Lakers. Kuminga continues to seek a deal exceeding $20 million annually," Sidery wrote.

However, landing Kuminga is not guaranteed for Cleveland. Instead, Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz believes the Cavaliers could pivot and complete a sign-and-trade for Denver Nuggets wing Peyton Watson in a four-team blockbuster deal.

Cavaliers get: Peyton Watson on an $80 million contract
Nuggets get: Derrick Jones Jr., Brook Lopez, 2032 second-round pick (via Cleveland), 2033 second-round pick (via Cleveland)
Pistons get: Dennis Schroder
Clippers get: Cam Johnson and Max Strus

This deal would be a major move for the Cavaliers, as Watson would come in at a similar price point to what Kuminga is seeking. However, Watson arguably provides even more upside and could be easier for Cleveland to negotiate with long term.

Cleveland would sign Watson to an $80 million contract, locking him in for the next four seasons. The Nuggets have reportedly lowered their asking price for Watson due to their difficult luxury tax situation. A move to Cleveland could be a strong fit for Watson, as he would join a roster featuring Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
