Saturday Down South’s Connor O’Gara believes former Longhorns head coach Tom Herman, who was fired on November 18 by FAU after a 6-16 start with the Owls, may never get another head coaching job again – just three years after Texas sent him packing.
“Seven years ago, Tom Herman could've named his price. Now, he might not ever get another FBS head coaching job and he's not even 50,” O’Gara wrote.
Not only is FAU firing Herman, but as ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports, the school is undoing one of his final personnel decisions. Owls defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni will be re-hired immediately.
“Florida Atlantic is also rehiring defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni, who was fired by Herman on Nov. 10. Lunsford wanted Bellantoni back in his role, sources told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, who added that the move isn't a poor reflection on interim defensive coordinator Brandon Harris, who prepared the defense well for Saturday's game against Temple. Harris serves as the team's cornerbacks coach,” Thamel wrote.
Herman’s seat was getting hotter as the Owls continued losing in 2024. It’s not a surprise to see him let go, though the timing of midseason hirings is always curious.
No Power 4 coaches have been fired during the 2024 season. Eight Group of Five coaches have been fired, though; proving that NIL is forcing bigger programs to avoid falling behind in the NIL arms race but making small schools act quicker to avoid irrelevancy.
The team that beat Herman, Temple, fired Stan Drayton on November 17. Typically, coaches don’t play each other in each’s final game in Week 12.
Herman will receive a buyout of over $4 million. That may be his final big payday in the sport.
