All-Star reliever returns to Giants after rough Yankees, Pirates stints

A former San Francisco Giants All-Star reliever is back with the NL West organization. 

On Thursday, the Giants announced that right-hander Blake Tidwell was transferred to the 60-day IL. 

Taking Tidwell's spot on the active roster is fellow righty Camilo Doval, who was recently designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

Giants fans are familiar with Doval. 

The flamethrower spent parts of the first five seasons of his career in San Francisco before a midseason trade to the New York Yankees last year. 

He led the NL with 39 saves and posted a 2.93 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 67.2 innings in 2023. 

However, Doval's effectiveness has become less and less since then.

The Yankees removed him from a high-leverage role earlier this year and subsequently traded him to the Pirates at the deadline.

The 29-year-old posted a respectable 3.79 ERA in 20 appearances for the Pirates, but he walked nearly 16% of the batters he faced in Pittsburgh. 

For the Giants, there's no harm in bringing Doval back into the bullpen mix, especially for the final few days of the regular season. 

If San Francisco's front office likes what they see, they can tender him a contract for the 2027 season.
