Tuscaloosa County players celebrate victory during the AHSAA Class 7A boys basketball state championship at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Tuscaloosa County defeated Hoover 65-54.

Alabama's AHSAA boys basketball state championships wrapped up Saturday with seven new champions celebrating wins in the state finals.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Hoover's 65-54 loss to the Tuscaloosa County [Northport] Wildcats in the Class 7A title game. The Buccaneers were playing for their fourth straight state championship in Alabama's top classification, but their reign ended against a feisty Wildcats' squad that was determined to claim a trophy of their own

The win was Tuscaloosa County's first in a championship game since 1960, ending a 66-year drought in dramatic fashion against a Hoover squad that has refused to budge from the 7A throne since claiming the crown in 2023.

And while Tuscaloosa County's win might have been the most unexpected result, the margin of the Wenonah [Birmingham] Dragons' 101-40 victory over the Sylacauga Aggies in the Class 5A title tilt was also a head turner. The Dragons set multiple records in the victory, becoming the first team in Alabama state history to top the century mark in a state championship game while also shattering the margin of victory in a title contest by 20 points.

The Dragons' 61-point win topped the 41-point advantage by Birmingham's former Hayes High School over Anniston in a 1974 state title game. It also marked quite a turnaround from the 2025 semifinals when the Dragons were nipped by this same Aggies' squad in a 69-68 loss in the Class 5A semifinals.

In the Class 3A title game, the Montgomery Academy Eagles became back-to-back champions in a 67-39 rout of the Southside [Selma] Panthers, adding a trophy to go along with the one they picked up last year in a 65-56 win in the championship game over the Mars Hill Bible [Florence] Panthers.

The Brantley Bulldogs, meanwhile, were making their second straight appearance in a championship game as well after losing, 69-67, to the Hatch [Uniontown] Bobcats a year ago. This time, it was Brantley emerging on top in another one-possession game, edging the the Hubbertville [Fayette] Lions by a single point, 45-44.

Other championship game winners included the Class 6A Oxford Yellow Jackets (68-44 over the Cullman Bearcats), the Class 4A Fairfield Tigers (65-42 over the Ashville Bulldogs), and the Class 2A Section Lions (54-42 over the LaFayette Bulldogs.
