Al Horford discusses retirement plans following Celtics elimination

The Boston Celtics' season ended on Friday night, but was it also the end of Al Horford's career?

Horford, who will turn 39 in June, is set to enter free agency this summer; that is, if he decides to keep playing.

No one would be shocked to see Horford call it quits after winning an NBA championship last season. On the other hand, Horford indicated back in April that he was planning to play beyond this season.

Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury may have changed Horford's plans, however, as Boston's chances of contending for a title next season are slim to none. By the time Tatum returns to full strength in 2026-27, Horford will be north of 40 years old, and who knows what the Celtics' roster will look like at that point?

The day after Boston's Game 6, Horford was asked about his plans for next season during an exit interview.

Per CLNS Media's Bobby Manning, who was present for Horford's exit interview that took place at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Horford hasn't made up his mind on a decision regarding his future in the NBA or with the Celtics.

"Asked if he plans to continue and return to Boston, (Horford) said it’s too soon to discuss that," Manning reported.

"Said he’ll consider everything, including discussing with his family in the (coming) weeks," Manning added.

While Horford mulls his decision, Celtics fans will be focused on GM Brad Stevens, who is tasked with figuring out how to navigate the next year without Tatum.
