Yankees blockbuster trade idea lands two-time All-Star from rival Blue Jays

It looks for all the world like the New York Yankees are one piece away from excellence.

After losing Juan Soto to the rival New York Mets this offseason, the Yankees did a good job of rebuilding their offense on the fly. Paul Goldschmidt has been a great addition, Cody Bellinger is finally starting to heat up, and Ben Rice and Trent Grisham have been unexpected saviors.

However, the Yankees are still one quality infielder away from the best version of their lineup. Third base has been manned all season by a strange combination of Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas.

Fortunately, the Yankees have some flexibility when Jazz Chisholm Jr. returns, because they know Chisholm can play either second or third base. So, too, could a division rival shortstop whose name has been floating around the trade rumor mill.

The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling to get above .500, and they've got some high-profile free agents, including two-time All-Star Bo Bichette. Newsweek's Andrew Wright named Bichette as a possible Yankees trade target in an article on Saturday.

"Bichette has enjoyed success at Yankee Stadium in his career, as he has a .302 average with 12 home runs and 43 RBI," Wright wrote. "His success in that stadium could be another reason that New York would try and make a move.

"It is unclear if Toronto would be willing to move off Bichette, especially if it's the Yankees that call about him. If they are, however, it could certainly cement New York as the favorites to represent the AL in the World Series."

Bichette, 27, led the American League in hits in 2021 and 2022, and after an uncharacteristically poor showing in 2024, he's rebounded well to start the new season. He's got a .294 batting average and .780 OPS through 44 games.

Toronto would presumably have to be well out of the playoff race to consider sending Bichette to a division rival, but it's within reason given that most other contenders have their infields fairly well stocked.
