An AEW star has finally been given their first singles match on Dynamite in more than four years. Unfortunately for them, this was short-lived as the match ended in under a minute.
Lee Johnson has been with the promotion since 2020 and was considered one of the best up-and-coming talents at the time. He has been less active in the promotion as he shifted his focus to Ring of Honor. He is currently affiliated with Blake Christian, also known as The Swirl.
Tonight on AEW Dynamite: New Year's Smash, he was in singles competition against Brody King. This was Big Shotty's first singles match since August 2021. During that time, he unsuccessfully challenged Miro for the TNT Championship. Brody was also competing in his first singles match since May this year. He has been less active since joining the tag team division with Bandido.
Lee Johnson looked to get a jump early in the match, going for a dive to the outside just as King was making his entrance. However, this would be all for naught, as the momentum instantly shifted the other way once Brody King regained his senses.
The former House of Black member was able to connect with a brutal Cannonball in the corner before connecting with a Gonzo Bomb. This match concluded in exactly 52 seconds, which was far from an ideal match for Johnson. His in-ring return to Dynamite in over four years concluded in just under a minute.
Brody King is looking to build himself up as a singles competitor, as he has an agreement with Bandido. If the luchador ends up dethroning MJF in a few weeks at Maximum Carnage, becoming the new AEW World Champion, Brody will get the first title shot. This could be great competition between the two close allies.
