Aaron Paul Reveals Emotional Pact With Daughter Story

Aaron Paul Talks About Special Gesture

Aaron Paul is breaking a bad habit for his kids.

The Breaking Bad star shared that he made a pact with his and wife Lauren Parsekian Paul’s 7-year-old daughter Story to no longer be on his phone when he’s with her after the two shared a moment together.

“My daughter comes running in and she's asking me a question,” Aaron recalled in a clip from WSJ Tech Live posted to Instagram Nov. 5. “I’m trying to just finish this quick email. Then she stopped asking and she kind of went and started playing.”

That moment with Story—which he said took place a year ago—prompted the 46-year-old to put his phone down and candidly apologize. “‘I want to say I'm sorry for not being responsive to you,’” he recalled. “And I go, ‘I want to make a pact with you right now. I want to promise Daddy's not gonna be on his phone when he's with you anymore.’”

“She did a one word response,” Aaron recounted. “She looks at me, she goes, ‘Really?’ Just, ‘Really?’”

The Emmy winner revealed that the emotional moment broke his heart and made him reiterate his promise to his daughter.

“She just jumped up and threw her arms around me,” he added, “like she won the biggest prize.”

And as Aaron—who is also dad to 3-year-old son Ryder with Lauren—explained, he feels that as parents “we owe it to our kids to at least give it a shot” when it comes to putting aside technology whenever possible.

But as the El Camino actor noted, it’s not a sentiment shared by everyone around him.

“I was having dinner earlier, and it felt like such doom and gloom,” he said. “They're like, ‘No, you're gonna get left behind.’”

But Aaron completely disagreed, saying, “You can choose whether the technology controls you. You should control the technology.”

And Aaron isn’t alone in his desire to keep his phone and technology away from his kids, as Miranda Kerr recently echoed a similar feeling in regard to her children with husband Evan Spiegel.

"My husband is very anti-screens for the young ones,” Miranda shared on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Show in October, “because that's the way he was raised.”

The model—who is mom to sons Hart, 7, Myles, 6, and Pierre, 19 months with Evan, as well as son Flynn, 14, with ex-husband Orlando Bloom—added that the couple managed to compromise on some screentime for the older kids.

“I’ve said to him, ‘Look, something that feels good to me is maybe on the weekend or a special occasion, curling up with the kids, [the] 6 and 7-year-old and the teenager if he wants to join in, and snuggling up and watching a movie,” she explained. “And he's like, ‘OK, but not every weekend.’”
