LAS VEGAS — The ETA — Estimated Time of Arms — for the Yankees might not be as off as recent domestic air travel. But it is far from an ideal schedule based largely on how long a delay there turns out to be before Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón land back in the rotation.
There is a scenario in which the Yankees are overflowing with starting pitcher options. But that is more Aug. 1 than April 1.
In the best-case world: Cole (Tommy John surgery) and Rodón (loose bodies removed from the elbow) return a month or so into the season; Carlos Lagrange and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz are ready to go all Cam Schlittler 2.0 around June 1; and Clarke Schmidt (Tommy John) returns around Aug. 1.
If the Yankees knew for sure that was going to happen, then they could open the year with Schlittler, Max Fried, Luis Gil, Will Warren and a much better place-holding veteran signed on the margins than Allan Winans. Then, as arms are fully rehabbed and/or are ready from the minors, they could be incorporated.
