Charles solved the puzzling case of the stolen necklace in the first season, giving him a new and intriguing life post-retirement. However, as he continued to work with Julie, he got fed up with covering infidelity-related cases and wanted to follow something more adventurous.

A new opportunity knocked at his door as Jack Beringer approached him and Julie for a case regarding Wheeler College. Beringer's $400 million worth laptop had been stolen mysteriously after he bagged a donation for the struggling college from billionaire Brad Vinick. E-mails threatening him to stop working with Vinick also created more confusion, hinting at darker forces behind it all.

Along with Ted Danson as Charles, other cast members in season 2 include Mary Elizabeth Ellis as Emily, Lilah Richcreek Estrada as Julie, John Getz as Elliott, Sally Struthers as Virginia, and Mary Steenburgen as Mona, among others.
